Glucosamine, Chondroitin And MSM Frequently Asked Questions

What Are Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM?
Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM are three substances that many health professionals believe can be beneficial in the maintenance and promotion of healthy joint function. They are often combined into a single capsule for the convenience of consumers.

Glucosamine is an amino sugar that occurs naturally in the human body where it’s an important structural component of the carbohydrates used as cellular building blocks. Glucosamine is also a precursor of a class of molecules called glycosaminoglycans, important structural components of human cartilage. Finally, glucosamine plays a critical role in binding sulfur to cartilage; without sulfur, the human body cannot lay down cartilage.

Chondroitin is a polysaccharide chain, also naturally occurring in the human body, that plays a vital role in maintaining the structural integrity of connective tissue.

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), also known as dimethylsulfone (DMSO2), is a sulfur compound for which a wide variety of health claims have been made over the years. It is packaged with glucosamine and chondroitin here because of its effectiveness as an analgesic and an anti-inflammatory.

History of Glucosamine and Chondroitin Use
The first published research on the use of glucosamine in osteoarthritis treatment appeared in Germany in 1969. Glucosamine has been actively studied in universities and laboratories throughout Europe and Asia where many members of the medical community think highly of its healing properties. Glucosamine didn’t become popular in the U.S. until 1997 when it was showcased in a bestseller called The Arthritis Cure.

In 2006, the National Institute of Health (NIH) funded a six month study to test the effectiveness of glucosamine and chondroitin on osteoarthritis of the knee. Results were inconclusive, although researchers found the glucosamine/chondroitin combination significantly reduced joint swelling and relieved pain. The study was widely criticized because several of its researchers worked for Pfizer, which manufactures medications to control osteoarthritis pain and so might be predisposed to view the supplements as competition.

In Europe, the use of glucosamine and chondroitin for osteoarthritis receives more support from the established medical community than it does in the U.S. OsteoArthritis Research Society International recommends chondroitin highly as the second most effective of all osteoarthritis treatments.

What Conditions Do Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM Treat?
As mentioned above, in combination Glucosamine, Chondroitin & MSM supplements are designed to promote and maintain healthy joint function. The supplements can be used prophylactically by individuals with no history of joint disease as part of their normal health regimen, or they can be used by patients who have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis for pain and inflammation control and to help the body heal damaged cartilage. The Food and Drug Administration, however, specifically prohibits the manufacturers of nutritional supplements from making claims about the effects of those supplements on medical conditions.

Glucosamine is believed to make cartilage stronger and better able to bear weight. Chondroitin enhances the shock-absorbing properties of collagen, a type of connective tissue found in joints. Chondroitin also appears to block the action of specific enzymes that destroy cartilage. MSM is linked to a variety of positive health benefits including increased blood supply, decreased inflammation, and pain control.

In the combination medication, glucosamine is generally supplied as glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin as chondroitin sulfate, and MSM as Lignisul MSM. Different companies manufacturing the nutritional supplement use different formulations, but most frequently the combination capsule includes 1,500 milligrams of glucosamine, 1,200 milligrams of chondroitin and 300 milligrams of MSM.

The recommended dosage is two to three capsules a day, taken with food.

Side Effects
Individuals with known allergies to sulfa drugs should speak with their primary health care provider before taking this supplement as most of the commercially available combination of these substances contain sulfur.

Glucosamine, as noted above, is a sugar and therefore has the potential to raise blood glucose levels. Diabetics should consult with their primary health care provider before using this supplement. Glucosamine is often manufactured from crustacean exoskeletons; though manufacturers claim that the substances, which trigger allergies in individuals susceptible to shellfish, have been removed, still individuals with known shellfish allergies should use this supplement cautiously.

MSM is known to prolong blood clotting intervals. Therefore individuals who are taking Warfarin or heparin should not use it.

Glucosamine and MSM may both cause gastric upset and should always be taken with food. Chondroitin has no known side effects. Vitamin C appears to potentiate MSM’s ability to reduce swelling.
