Echinacea FAQ

What is Echinacea used for?
Echinacea was once thought of as a cure-all by the Native Americans. Today we use it to lessen the symptoms of the cold and flu and to boost the immune system. Some herbalists agree it helps the body ward off infections.

What are other things Echinacea may help?
Other ailments where Echinacea can be of help include relieving pain, antioxidant boosts, and hormonal imbalances. This can be helpful in the treatment of ear infections, hay fever, yeast infections, UTIs, and athlete’s foot.

Where can I buy Echinacea?
This is an herbal remedy that is found in many over-the-counter products and can be bought online, through mail order, and via drugstores and pharmacies.

What is Echinacea?
A perennial herb plant, Echinacea has pink or purple flowers on a tall stem. There is a purple or brown center and a seed head with sharp spines. It is native to the North American Midwest.

What does Echinacea consist of?
There are many compounds in this plant-based remedy. It has flavonoids, glycoproteins, polysaccharides, alkamides, and volatile oils. The polysaccharides are the compounds that will help trigger the immune system activity.

Are all forms of Echinacea the same?
While Echinacea pallida and Echinacea angustifolia have also been approved to be used in herbal remedies and medicinal drugs, Echinacea purpurea has the best effect and benefits.

How is it offered?
Echinacea can come in capsules, ointments, tablets, capsules, extracts, and tinctures. They may be stand-alone remedies or added into other mineral, vitamin, and herb compounds.

What dosage should I take?
For children, the dosage should be done by weight. While the adult dosage is considered to be done for 150 lbs, the children’s dosage is the percentage of their weight versus the 150 lbs. So if the child is 50 lbs, dosage is 1/3 of the adult dosage.
For adults, it is typically taken three times a day for a week to 10 days. Dosage should be 300 mg of standardized 4% phenolics powdered extract, 2 to 3 ml of tincture extract, 1 to 2 g of root or herb tea, 6 to 9 ml of expressed juice, or 1 to 3 ml of tincture (1:5).

What precautions should I take with Echinacea?

While there is a risk of allergy, like with all medications and plants, there are other precautions to take with this herbal remedy. Those with diabetes, tuberculosis, HIV, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, connective tissue disorders, liver disorders, autoimmune disease, or leukemia should not take it.

What are possible interactions with Echinacea and other drugs?
Those taking the antifungal Econazole should not take Echinacea as it may reduce the effectiveness and cause a recurrence of the infection.
Those taking immunosuppressants for organ transplantation or cancer treatment, should not take Echinacea.

What is the Echinacea history?
This was a popular herb in the 18th and 19th century, but dropped after the discovery and use of antibiotics. It is still a widely used remedy in Germany, where most of the studies and scientific research has been done. It has been more readily available and well-received in Europe than its native North America.
