Widespread Alcohol Abuse in UK
The UK economy loses 55 billion pounds every year due to alcohol abuse and it also kills an estimated 40,000 people in Wales and England alone. Also crimes which are committed under the influence of alcohol are also on the rise and this cost a further 13 billion pounds to the British economy. Studies are showing that this problem is mainly due to the promotional offers in bars and cheap liquor being sold in the supermarkets.
The British government is thinking of banning speed drinking competitions in bars and also promotions that have “All you can drink” offers. They also intend to regulate the price of alcohol sold in supermarkets which often is sold below the cost price. There will be stricter screening of proof of age for customers who look to be below 18 years. Bars will be required to sell wine, beer and other liquor in smaller measures than what is being sold at present. Pub owners and the people who break any of these laws will face stricter punishment which will include jail for six months or a fine of up to 20,000 pounds. The new laws are being planned to curb the dangers of alcohol abuse and to make a night out more safe.
