Why YOU Should Stop Smoking
If you are a smoker, then you just might be thinking that non-smokers are sanctimonious people who just do not get it. Well, you are absolutely wrong. The problem lies not with non-smokers; rather, it lies with you. You do not realize that you are slowly poisoning yourself by smoking. There are about 4,000 toxins that enter your body whenever you smoke. These chemicals can lead to heart failure, skin or lung cancer, asthma, and a host of many other very serious conditions.
I know how it feels to smoke. I understand why you automatically reach out for a stick even if you know it is bad for you. I also know that I was ashamed to smoke in public places. I dreaded going near people because I carried a smell — the cigarette smell. I kept menthol candies in my bag at all times. Now, after realizing the ill effects of smoking and being able to quit, I find myself on the other side of the fence — and liking it.
I am sure you have heard all the reasons why you should quit the habit. Health, beauty, long life — these are actually great reasons. However, here is one more reason to quit smoking.
Smoking is a form of escape. When you are stressed, you feel the urge to light one. When you are depressed, you look for some comfort in puffing away; and when you are having fun, you hide behind the supposed glamour of the cigarette. Whatever situation you are in, smoking has become your screen.
Therefore, the last reason to quit smoking is freedom. If you quit the habit, you will no longer have to hide behind any smokescreen. You will not be looked down to. Your body will not be held hostage to your smoking habits. You will actually be a happier person.
More and more institutions are banning smoking in public areas. Smokers are being segregated to a small well-ventilated room, away from the main dining room. The trend is clear, but the process is slow.
If you really intend to quit smoking, you must be psychologically and emotionally prepared for the difficult phase of separation. The first day will be the hardest, but as you progress, it will become easier to work your daily routine without getting upset or upsetting others. Try to control your emotions and your urge to smoke. The will to quit is a strong partner. Keep your eye on the rewards of quitting — good health, better complexion, less wrinkles, a long life, and freedom from being branded.
