Vitamin D and the Common Cold
There have been resent study that shows a direct correlation between the instances of the common cold and the flu virus in those individuals that have low Vitamin D levels. The study states that of those with the lower D levels the instances of colds and flu were much higher than in those individuals that had higher levels. This is surprising. There will be more studies in the future to help determine what levels of Vit. D are required to protect us against cold and flu infections.
Vitamin D deficiency is rampant in today’s world. We do not get enough sunlight because we are worried about skin cancer and our bodies need the sun to produce the vitamin D. So many people resort to supplementation to bring their levels up to normal limits. There is no set amount of Vitamin D that is accepted as a standard. It can range anywhere from 200I.U. to 10000I.U. per day. It would be best to ask the advice of your doctor before starting any supplement therapy.
A simple search on the internet will get you results that you will be surprised at. Vitamin D is now known to be much more important than thought of in the past. Studies indicate that proper levels of Vitamin D will assist the body in its fight against infection. This could have a major impact on how we look at the treatments of infection in the future. We will have to watch closely to see the developing results. In the meantime, it cannot hurt to add a little bit of vitamin D to your supplementation. In addition, it may even help.

Hello,
It is really nice to see an article like this. Most articles I have come across online about sun exposure are always about covering up, putting on cream – when in fact we shouldn’t be doing this. We NEED sunlight!
The best bet is to have some common sense and get a little bit of body exposure everyday and build up.
I am not a fan of supplementation either – as you say there is no set amount. If you just go out in the sun, your body with synthesize what is needs and you won’t risk putting your body out of balance (although it is already from lack of vitamin D).
Great article, thanks.
Kelly
