Timing Is Vital For The Request Of Organs

Submitted by Shue on Monday, 27 April 2009No Comment

It is a well known fact that the waiting list for organs all over the world is lengthening by the minute. Irrespective of how unfortunate the cause of the death of an individual may be, donation of organs can save the lives of millions all over across the globe. Lack of knowledge regarding the importance of donating organs was perceived to be the main reason for the reluctance among people. A latest study has proven this perception wrong. A recent study conducted by a team of doctors and researchers has brought to light the significance of   who makes the donation request to the patient and his or her family and when.

The study was conducted by Dr. Duncan Young, of John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, along with his colleagues who reviewed 20 studies and found the link between time gap between the delivery of the unpleasant news and the request for donation of organs. They found that about 41 percent of the request was denied when timed wrongly. It so happens that in several cases, the hospital authorities bluntly makes a request to the patient’s family when they are experiencing a deep loss. This request for organs that can be used for organ transplantations during the time of death of a loved one causes more hurt to the injured. This results in the request being denied.

There are two vital factors to be considered while making a request; one being who makes the request and other being when. Study has proven that when requests are made by a transplant coordinator and the hospital staff, the success rate of requests are higher.  Besides who makes the request, the amount of information given to the family regarding the importance and the impact of donation, the location where the request is made, the approach, empathy shown by the authorities and the amount of time given to the family to make the decision play a vital role in the success rate of the donation request.
