Three Heart Transplants-One Family
It is hard to imagine but there is a family in the UK that has twin daughters and both of them have a rare disease called dilated cardiomyopathy. The mother of the twins suffers from this condition as well and will have to undergo her own transplant eventually. One of the daughters has had her transplant already. She will need another transplant in about ten years. The mother’s parents kept her condition from her thinking that was the best move to make. Now she must live with the fact that her daughters are sick and will be requiring lifelong medical treatment.
All three of the patients are currently on medication to keep the cardiomyopathy in remission. The longer they can go before they get their transplant the better off they will be. Little Katie was only three months old when she was diagnosed with the heart condition. She is doing well now after her transplant but still must be fed intravenously.
It is terribly ironic that an entire family should be traumatized in this way. Such serious health issues should have been brought to the mother’s attention before she chooses to have children. Now she must live with this the rest of her life. Her children are sick and so is she. Her parents thought they were doing the right thing but they should have been consulted so that they could possibly have made better choices.
Dilated Cardiomyopathy is a condition that prevents the heart from pumping blood properly. It is not a common condition and it is notorious for running in families. It is heartbreaking to realize that an entire family unit could be wiped out by this medical condition. We can only hope that modern medicine will make it possible for them to live fully.
