The Importance of Minerals in a Diet

Submitted by Shue on Saturday, 30 January 2010No Comment

Many people are conscious of getting the right amount of vitamins in their diets but pay little attention to minerals. Minerals play an important part for maintaining good health and they should not be ignored. Minerals are inorganic substances and there are various minerals which are required by the body in varying quantities.

Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium are the minerals which are present in all the cells of the body and even a small imbalance in their intake can prove disastrous to the health of the body. If you are having a proper diet the requirements of these minerals are met and their deficiency or imbalance is usually caused by factors such as particular illness, age and so on. The body needs minerals for performing certain vital functions like building new tissue, processing nerve reactions, clotting blood, regulating pH levels, releasing energy from food, contracting muscles and regulating other processes in the body.

There are certain minerals which are needed in small quantities but they are equally important. These minerals are copper which helps the body to absorb iron, selenium that ensures the health of cells and Iodine which regulates metabolic activities with the production of thyroid hormones.
