The Benefits Of Having Sisters

Submitted by Shue on Thursday, 2 April 2009No Comment

Have you been complaining about sharing your clothes and your accessories with your sister and wished you had a brother who would mind his own business unlike your girl sibling? Have you been grumbling about your daughter’s unending list of wants and demands and wished having boys would have made life easier? Think again. A latest research has proven that having girls in the family helps maintain a healthy emotional equilibrium. Be it your daughter or your sister, the girls of the family can spread happiness to everybody in the family.

It is well known fact that women are more emotional expressive than men. This attribute about women influences the people in the family to open up and lighten their emotional burden by discussing their inner problems with the rest of the family members. Girls, who normally externalize their emotions, by sharing it and talking about it with friends and families, have a positive impact on the communication between family members. On the other hand, boys tend to externalize their emotions and tend to have a negative impact on the family’s communication. While sisters spread joy in the family, brothers tend to spread distress.

This was proven through a research conducted by the Ulster University team, who questioned 571 people aged 17 to 25 about their lives. In this study, participants were asked to fill in psychological questionnaires. The researchers studied issues such as the impact of a sibling on having a positive outlook and other mental health problems. The participants chosen for this experiment was brought up in broken families were the parents had separated and the influence of sisters was pronounced. According to the study, the impact of girls are marked in families who have gone through distressing events such as a break up or a loss of a family member.
