Reloxin- the rival for Botox

Submitted by on Tuesday, 24 March 20092 Comments

A lot of people go for Botox injections to reduce wrinkles on the face and look younger. But this an expensive option. A vial of botox can cost upto $500 and it wont be sufficient for even two patients at times. Reloxin is cheaper than Botox and could be its rival as it gives similar results. Reloxin is being used in two dozen countries already but needs approval from the Food and Drug Administration.

“There is antipathy toward Allergan from the physician’s standpoint,” Dr. Otto Placik, a plastic surgeon said. “Allergan has taken advantage of their monopoly. Botox has gone up in price every year, which in turn has decreased physician profit margin.”

A small difference exists between the two. Reloxin spreads a little into the surrounding area and this must be considered before using it as it may result in drooping eyelids, drooping brows and other such complications if used by someone who is used to Botox. Reloxin also has a fifth to a third of the strength of botox and hence doctors will need to learn a little as the dosages of the two will vary. And doctors say that the skills they have developed for using botox will not hold good for Reloxin as they will need to consider the diffusion and hence the jab sites will vary. Also if it spreads to the muscles, it may result in relaxing the muscles one doesn’t want to relax.

With a little education and experience, once approved, reloxin can be made to show similar effects like Botox and will become as popular as Botox since it is cheaper. But some doctors say that because of the results seen in Botox and its history, people maynot switch over to Reloxin easily. But new patients trying this may go for it considering its lower prices.
