Submitted by Shue on Sunday, 31 January 2010No Comment

Horner’s syndrome is a type of disorder which is seen with the eye. It is complex and has different types of manifestations. There are various features of the Horner’s syndrome. It is typified by deep set eyes, dropping eye lids also called Ptosis, contraction of the pupil and an absence of facial sweat. These are the typical features of this type of disorder. Sometimes the eye colour can also be different. The innervations to the eye are through nerves called sympathetic nerves. When they get paralysed or have lesions in them, Horner’s syndrome is caused.

Usually treatment for this type of problem goes much beyond the eye. Since we understand that the problem is seen deeper within the nerves, one of the main things to do is to find the area of the lesion. This takes some time and involves some sophisticated techniques. There are no set reasons or causes for the disorder and can develop just like that. There have been suggestions that it may be hereditary but its exact path has not been traced yet. Some times immune problems of viral infections can be reasons. It is difficult to specify the reason. Since it is difficult to diagnose the reason there are no set means of preventing this disorder.
