Higher eating disorder among vegetarian teenagers
A very surprising result was seen in a study which showed that teenagers who turn vegetarian had higher eating disorders such as binge disorder. until now we have only heard of all the benefits that children eating vegetables get like decreased chances of obesity so this is a new angle into the all veggie diet. In this study, about 2500 young adults in the ages between 15 and 23 were studied. Their weight and efforts they put into their eating behavior was studied. It was true that they had a healthier diet and had lower risks of obesity but they displayed higher chances of eating disorders such as binge eating, taking weight control pills, inducing vomiting, taking laxatives, etc. The researcher involved in the study, Ramona Robinson-O’Brien said that parents should know that vegetarianism is a healthy diet but the reasons for doing this should be healthy. “Parents should talk to their child about their motivations for embarking on a vegetarian diet. If reasons are primarily related to weight loss, parents should explore this topic in more depth to further assess an increased risk of disordered eating behaviors.” Some children use vegetarianism as an excuse to eat less. The study said that having veg food was good for the health and it gave a lot of benefits. But the children choosing this path only for reducing weight is not healthy and such children should be helped by the parents to come up with a healthy diet plan. If necessary a dietician can be consulted. It is important to note that this study doesn’t say that vegetarianism leads to eating disorders. It just shows that the young adults who choose this path for the wrong reasons may end up with eating disorders. For further details please refer to the source of the article.
