Hairiness in Women- Not Just a Cosmetic Problem
About five to fifteen percent of women have problems with facial hair and excessive body hair. Waxing, electrolyzing and threading are some of the methods these women have to do in order to feel better in public. This may not be just a cosmetic problem but could be an indicator of the underlying medical condition.
Hormone disorder is the cause in most cases. The main cause could be the high testosterone level, which is the male hormone, in the body. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is seen in 70 to 80 percent of the cases. This condition is called hirsutism and can cause a lot of distress and confusion among young women.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is one of the causes for fertility problems. Excessive hair can also be caused because of tumors and thyroid dysfunction. Use of some drugs can also cause hairiness in women. if you notice a change in the regular pattern of hair growth or realize that you have to wax more often than before, you probably should go to a doctor and get it checked out.
Mild cases are not dangerous and just treating the issue as a cosmetic problem will be sufficient but severe cases will require hormone therapy. Loss of weight by obese people can get the testosterone level to normal and using oral contraceptive pills is another method.
Women suffering from this problem should feel free to go to an endocrinologist or a dermatologist. Most women find it embarrassing to go to a doctor with this problem and others feel it’s easier to just wax if off. Even in a benign state, it is worth getting investigated as it may reveal an underlying more serious problem, which if found early will prevent a lot of complications.
