Glucose, Sucrose Or Fructose: Which Is Better?

Submitted by Shue on Monday, 27 April 20092 Comments

Have you ever wondered what gives your favorite soft drink or ice cream that taste that makes you want more? What is that ingredient that gives your favorite sweet that yumminess that makes you crave for another plate of the same? Going through the complicated list of ingredients makes us wonder which is the magic component of them all. Which class of sugar gives it that special touch? Although we can not differentiate between the different classes of sugar, be it sucrose, glucose or fructose,   our body can.

Researchers from the University of California conducted an experiment which showed that the human body reacts to different class of sugar differently. Researchers selected thirty two obese men and women and assigned them to drink three daily servings of glucose or fructose sweetened beverage for ten weeks. This solution was mixed with their daily energy drink. The candidates of the experiment were asked to continue with their normal diet but were instructed not to drink any other sugary liquids.

The results of this experiment proved that there is significant difference between glucose and fructose. Those candidates who consumed fructose-sweetened drinks showed an increase in intra-abdominal fat, their sensitivity towards insulin reduced and they also showed signs of dyslipidemia, which is an elevated blood level of lipids. This group also showed a rise in the fat production in the liver and had bad cholesterol at the end of ten weeks. Whereas the group that was drinking glucose-sweetened beverages did not show any harmful effects.

This study reveals that different classes of sugar, or even fat have different functional effects on the human body. This study draws home the importance of a healthy diet which includes minimum sweetened products as most of the products, especially beverages, have a high content of fructose. However, consuming anything in moderation may not be harmful. One can always get more information from the source of this article.

Late reply…but someone else who stumbles across this will have the same question. The dry form of glucose is usually called dextrose. Whole foods will order it for you as will any cake supply store.

Interestingly enough dextrose nearly always comes from corn sugar…which is most commonly used to create HFCS’.
