Female athletes watch out!
It is observed that in sports played by both men and women, women sustain more concussions than men. According to a research, concussion among girls playing soccer in high school is 68 percent higher than among boys. In high school basketball it is nearly 3 times higher for girls than for boys. They also found that women were given less information about concussions from their trainers, coaches, etc.than their male counterparts.
Concussion can lead to short term memory, seizures, depression in addition to other brain related problems. One need not even have to get knocked out to have a concussion. The most important thing to note is that sometimes CT scans and MRIs don’t show concussions and people tend to believe they are just fine. It can be detected using an electroencephalogram. It is important to rest after any impact to the head and give it some time to recover from the initial trauma. If one continues playing after the initial trauma, the blows received after that keeps adding to the injury.
In addition to having different levels of knowledge about concussion, women have different levels of different hormones in the brain and different levels of strength in the neck. There is difference in the play style too. In spite of all these differences the time taken for a male or a female athlete to return to play after an injury remains the same. Also since female players experience headaches, etc. during their menstrual cycle, their concussion symptoms may get dismissed.
Pressure from the coaches and the parents may well be one of the reasons that the young athletes with concussions return to play before the injury is completely healed. Hence it is very important to watch for concussion symptoms and get them checked every time an athlete meets with an injury.
