Fathers to be put on weight during their partners pregnancy

Submitted by Shue on Sunday, 24 May 2009No Comment

We all know women put on a lot of weight during pregnancy and some women don’t get pregnant fearing they will lose their figure. It turns out its not only the expecting mothers who put on but also their partners.

A study on 5,000 expecting men found that a man would add a weight of a stone which comes up to 6.35 kgs during their partner’s pregnancy. A fifth of the men in the study said they were given bigger meals and about 41% of them blamed the snacks that the house is loaded with.

A poll found that 25% of the men ate more to gain weight so their partners would feel better. According to the poll, favorite snacks that the men chose during their partner’s pregnancy included pizzas, chocolate, crisps and beer. The weight gain could also be because most couples went out to restaurants for dinner to make the most of the time they had left before the baby was born.

Majority gained about 2 inches around the waist and had to change their wardrobe. And a majority of the men realized they had gained weight only after their clothes stopped fitting.

The study said that the women are not to be blamed as it is natural for pregnant women to crave for fatty food and they tend to put on 2 and a half stones. Women are expected to eat 300 more calories everyday to meet the needs of the baby.

The study said father’s behavior is important not just the food part but also with drinking, smoking, substance abuse, etc. The kitchen should be filled with healthy snacked rather than sweets and cakes and alcohol shouldn’t be encouraged in the house.
