DOODLING- A TOOL TO ENHANCE MEMORY

Submitted by Shue on Friday, 27 February 20094 Comments

Have you thought that the random scribbling you made on your notepad while listening to a boring lecture can actually enhance your memory? These simple drawings may look messy with little or no meaning at all, but are a memory tool in itself. According to a recent study, doodle could be a sign of an alert mind.

A doodle is a type of sketch, an unfocused drawing made while a person’s attention is otherwise occupied. Doodling is primarily made by young people around the world, notably students. Doodling can also be made while talking by telephone for a long period of time if a pen and paper are available. Popular kinds of doodles include cartoon versions of people, landscapes, animations, etc.

This conclusion has been drawn on the basis of a test conducted by the researchers of Plymouth University. They carried out a memory test on 40 volunteers who had to listen to a 2.5 minutes telephone message. Volunteers were divided into two groups and were warned that the message could be of dull nature. As a part of the study, half of the volunteers were asked to color in shapes on a piece of paper while doing the task of listening and the other half were left to their own devices. After this, both the groups were tested on their recalling ability. They were asked to write down eight specific names and eight places that were mentioned in the telephone message. It was found that the doodlers were able to recall 7.5 while the others only managers 5.8. This means to say that the doodlers performed better than the non-doodlers by 29 per cent.

The reason behind this observation is that doodling prevents people from daydreaming and helped them focus on their mundane task at hand. Doodling is an undemanding task that can enhance your performance by improving your recalling ability. For further details you can visit the source of the article.

Still I would suggest one trained memory enhancement techniques (e.g. mnemonics) as these will take care of the concentration problem. That works always while doodling can only work if you can sit down, pen in hand. What if you were to listen to a message e.g. while driving or dressing a turkey?

Doodling seems to function like the mantra in mantra meditation, where you keep your mind busy with something very simple, while one is going deep into his subconsciousness.
For some time I am using Mind Power recordings. It is said that listening to them daily your memory is getting enhanced. It is difficult to believe or even understand what is happening to a brain while listening to a combination of several frequencies.I would not know if my memory has enhanced, but I am feeling more energetic, am more focused to what I am doing, get things cone quicker. I have definitely changed.

What is interesting is that not only children are doodling, but also creative people. So there definitely is something about doodling.
