China-made Trinkets for Kids are now even More Dangerous

Submitted by Shue on Friday, 15 January 2010No Comment

Recently China had been banned from lead usage in jewelry for children. But after this the Chinese manufacturers have substituted lead with an even more dangerous heavy metal called Cadmium. This was brought out by investigations conducted by Associated Press and surprisingly these trinkets are sold all over the United States in popular jewelry stores and chains like Walmart.

Cadmium is known to cause cancer and can even cause deformity of the brain in children. Even a very low dosage by chewing or sucking on the jewelry, can have very harmful consequences. Studies conducted on jewelry bought from franchisee and regional chains, showed an alarming 84 percent of cadmium content by weight, and highest recorded was 91 percent. The tests also showed that most of the jewelry shed Cadmium very easily, making it even more dangerous. Since there are no restrictions for use of Cadmium in jewelry, these hazardous trinkets are legally sold, and nothing has been done by federal consumer protection cell. There is regulation on Cadmium but it pertains to its usage only in painted toys and not to jewelry.

Know more about this looming danger here.
