A patient lost his testicle because a surgeon cut it off by mistake during a surgery, as was heard at the General Medical Council recently.
The patient was in surgery to remove a cyst from his testicle. Instead, surgeon Dr Sulieman Al Hourani removed the entire right testicle.
Dr Al Hourani was a locum surgeon at Fairfield General Hospital in Bury, Greater Manchester, at the time of the surgery in September 2007.
Sarah Prichard, counsel for the GMC, said the mistake was made as a nurse helping the surgeon turned her back to get a stitch.
When she turned around the testicle had been removed.
Ms Prichard said: “Literally as the nurse turned away to get a transfixion stitch, the incident occurred and the testicle was removed.
“Such was the level of concern they immediately realized it could be a serious medical incident and took steps to complete the relevant documentation.”
An investigation was launched at once and the doctor was dismissed by his employer, Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the hospital.
The case, expected to last three weeks, has been adjourned until next Tuesday.

Many wives and girlfriends have complained about their men staying sick longer than they would have as well as for seeming to suffer more than them. Scientists have now proven that this is not a myth at all. In fact, men do suffer more and longer than women. And, scientists blame it on the fact that men invest in their spirit of adventure at the expense of their immune system.
Scientists believe it is the male predilection for a “live fast, die young” lifestyle that means in evolutionary terms they have failed to build up their immune systems like females. This means that they are not only more prone to catching diseases, but also to suffer more seriously and for longer.
Dr Olivier Restif, of the University of Cambridge, said: “In many cases, males tend to be more prone to get infected or less able to clear infection.
“Proposed mechanisms include interference between male hormones and immunity, as well as risk-taking behaviour.
Dr Restif said: “An increase in male susceptibility or exposure to infection favours the spread of the pathogen in the whole population and therefore tends to select for higher resistance or tolerance in both sexes if the cost of immunity is essential.

Coffee has long been considered to be the main culprit for lowering sperm count for very long. And, considering there is more caffeine in coffee than in cola, it is surprising that regular consumption of coffee can lower men’s sperm count by as much as 30%, according to research done by Danish scientists.
The current study led by Professor Tina Kold Jensen of the University Department of Growth and Reproduction at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, included 2,554 young men and aimed to find out how the increasing consumption of soft drinks containing caffeine by young people in Denmark might affect male reproductive health.
When young people were having their compulsory physical examination to determine if they were fit for military service during the period of 2001 to 2005, they were recruited for this study.
The study found no link between caffeine in tea or coffee and the lowered sperm count, which meant the effect may be produced by other ingredients in the soft drinks, or other factors related to lifestyle, but the authors said they could not “exclude the possibility of a threshold above which cola, and possibly caffeine, negatively affects semen quality”.

Different hormones come to play in the male body system, right from the time the boy is in the womb to old age. They are responsible for the different stages in a man’s life as well as most characters associated with men. The Y chromosome plays a big role in the formation of testes from the embryonic tissue. From the tiny testes comes the hormone testosterone, which is responsible for the development of the scrotum and the penis.

After birth, nothing much happens in a boy’s hormones, until they reach puberty, when follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) produced by the pituitary gland, stimulate more testosterone production, which stimulate the physical changes that transform the boy into a man. These are physical growth and muscle development, growth of pubic hair, enlargement of the penis, continual production of sperm and breaking of the voice. Sexual stimulation begins here.

As an adult, there is continual growth of hair on the face and body; and production of sperm. Hormones contribute to the much dreaded hair loss in adult males too!

When one begins to age, testosterone levels begin to go down. The result is loss of libido, poor erections, irritability, mood signs (yes, men too have this!) and loss of muscle.
Men are poorer at having health check-ups than women. Most feel that by seeking medical help, they are being sissy. Others are embarrassed, especially if the problem involves private body parts and intimate issues of their lives. Seeking help early, precisely when you notice symptoms, is good as it could stop a serious disease on its tracks.

An easy way in which men counter their health problems is by making lifestyle changes, totally without involving a doctor, or even knowing what they are dealing with. Men with urinary disorders will stay for as long as a year without seeking help and will only do so if the symptoms become unbearable. What they will do to fit in with the condition is avoid intimacy and long distance travelling where it will be easy to note how frequently they keep visiting the toilet. They will even stop going to the movies or theatres. Men are really good at adjusting!

But for your own good, those symptoms may not be cancer after all. Imagine your relief when the doctor says, with a shrug, that it’s a passing infection. Even if it were cancer, it’s easier to treat it in the early stages.

If you can’t stomach facing the doc, consider the pharmacist. They offer reliable advice and no one will ever know why you went there.

Perhaps you have been sweating out in the gym in an aim to change how you look. It helps if you understand your body shape first, so as to know how to work towards the new shape you want. While there are many body shapes, they all fall under three broad categories. These are ectomorphs, endomorphs and mesomorphs.

Ectomorphs are thin and wispy, endomorphs are round and ectomorphs are muscular and athletic. These structures depend on one’s genetic make up and are difficult to change. A few alterations can still be made though, to fine tune your shape!

If you want an ectomorphic look, take on more aerobic exercises as well as those which allow full range of movement. Do lots of stretching too. Increase your intake of complex carbohydrates and tepid water.

To be mesomorphic, do short, explosive, intensive and dynamic exercises. Plenty of heavy weights are good too. Ensure you rest in between work-outs to give muscles room to grow.

Getting an endomorphic is probably the easiest. Eat junk, lots of beer, do little or no exercise and just be lazy. Keep in mind that changing your look is hard work but with consistency, you will get there.

Thrush or yeast infection does not occur in women only. It is common in men too and is caused by overgrowth of the fungus “Candida albicans”. Under normal circumstances, this fungus lives in and around the body and causes no harm; as long as there are good bacteria in the body to keep it in check. Only when the good bacteria are destroyed does it multiply, such as when one’s immunity takes a dip or when one is on antibiotics.

The most prevalent symptom of thrush in men is inflammation of the penis head. It becomes sore, red, irritable and itchy. Appearance of red spots or a collection of cheese-like material under the foreskin is possible. You can also get a penile discharge. If your partner has thrush, chances are you too have it, although there may be no symptoms showing yet.

Have your doctor check and test you for thrush immediately you notice any of these symptoms to rule out any other infection. Anti-fungal creams work well to clear it. High levels of hygiene are essential, as is keeping the area under and around the foreskin dry. Do not engage in sex while on treatment, but if you must, be sure to use a condom.

10 lawsuits have been recently filed in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas claiming that took the antipsychotic drugs Risperdal and Invega, has caused rapid weight gain and the growth of large breasts up to a size 38D in boys and young men. The Lawsuits are filed against Janssen, a division of the Ortho-McNeil-Janssen pharmaceutical company, which is also affiliated with Johnson & Johnson.
The attorney, Mr. Stephen Sheller, who filed the lawsuits said that he plans to file at least 20 to 30 similar cases in Philadelphia over the next two months. Sheller also warns that some doctors may not have taken some of his clients seriously when they complained of their breast growth because of simultaneous weight gain, which he one of the other side effects of Risperdal.
Risperdal is FDA-approved for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar mania, and symptoms of autism. However, the drug is also prescribed off-label to treat other problems such as attention deficit disorder, Tourette syndrome or disruptive behavior.
Most of the suits accuse the drug company of negligence and fraud for failing to adequately warn doctors and patients of the drugs’ side effects.

A study reports that men who stifle their anger at work are at risk of a heart attack. The study reveals that men who bottle up their anger at being unfairly treated at work are up to five times more likely to suffer a heart attack, or even die from one, than those who let their frustration show.
The study was conducted by the Stress Research Institute of Stockholm University. It followed 2,755 employed men who had not suffered any heart attacks from 1992 to 2003. At the end of the duration, 47 men had suffered from a heart attack or died from one.

Several other employees were found to have found covert ways of coping with their anger at being unfairly treated, without letting their frustration really show. Covert coping was listed as “letting things pass without saying anything” and “going away” despite feelings of being hard done by colleagues or bosses.
“After adjustment for age, socioeconomic factors, risk behaviors, job strain and biological risk factors at baseline, there was a close-response relationship between covert coping and the risk of incident myocardial infarction or cardiac death,” the study’s authors wrote.
The study was published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

A new research paper in the UK says that men who have had frequent sex in their 20s and 30s are far more likely to develop prostate cancer later in life compared to those who did not enjoy an extremely active sex life. But what is scarier is that the study indicates that men, who masturbated frequently instead of having sex with a partner, are even more likely to get prostate cancer.
The study was led by Dr. Polyxeni Dimitropoulou of the University of Cambridge. “We were keen to look at the links between sexual activity and younger men as a lot of prostate cancer studies focus on older men as the disease is more prevalent in men over 50,” Dimitropoulou said.
According to the study, prostate cancer is linked to male hormones and the more sexed lives the men led in their 20s and 30s, the higher the hormone levels are likely to be and hence greater is the risk of developing prostate cancer.
“Overall we found a significant association between prostate cancer and sexual activity in a man’s twenties and between masturbation and prostate cancer in the twenties and thirties,” said Dimitropoulou. “However there was no significant association between sexual activity and prostate cancer in a man’s forties.”
