There is a lot of concern on the increasing number of children who are getting overweight at an alarmingly early age. As a parent, it is imperative that you take charge of your child’s life and help them stay healthy. Preventing obesity in young children is vital because clinicians are yet to find a cure or effective treatment for obesity in children. In older people, the condition can be manageable, but in children, it opens the door for more life-threatening complications.

Be cautious with the kinds of food you feed your child. Stick to healthy, natural foods as much as possible. Remember that if you do not introduce sweet foods to your child, they will grow with little cravings for them. Getting over sugary cravings will be easier to deal with if they are introduced to sugars when they are older, as opposed to at a tender age.

Cultivating non-food related habits can also keep your kids slim. One of these is ensuring that your child gets enough sleep every night. Enforce an 8-hour sleep pattern for your child. Cut down the time they spend watching TV. This will make their life more active.

You may be burning with desire and motivation to take up exercise in a bid to maintain a healthy weight. Unfortunately, you could see no results if you are doing it wrongly. Yes, there is a right and a wrong way to exercise. Here is what you need to bear in mind when working out.

Commitment is key. This means you have to exercise on a regular basis, not when you feel like. You also have to do different types of exercises so that all muscles in the body are exercised. If not, you will end up working out a couple of muscles only, which is not effective at all.

Prepare your body for the exercise by warming up just before you begin to exercise. This relaxes the body so that you do not strain and get muscle injuries easily. Cool-down the same way after the exercise to ease the body into a baseline state. Simple stretching works well, just as light cardio exercises.

Learn how to breathe properly and deeply without holding your breath. It will enhance the intensity of the exercise.

Eat adequate amounts of food to give your body enough fuel for the workout. The same goes for water. You body needs to be properly hydrated throughout the exercise. To the horror of many avid television viewers, researchers have discovered that every hour per day spent watching television increases your chance of dying from heart disease by one-fifth.
Until now, it was popularly believed that there was an indirect link between TV and heart diseases- TV leads to a sedentary lifestyle which, in turn, leads to heart diseases. However, researchers claim that even the most physically fit are at risk for heart disease when they spend a good amount of time watching TV.
“Even if someone has a healthy body weight, sitting for long periods of time still has an unhealthy influence on their blood sugar and blood fats,” says Professor David Dunstan, the study’s lead researcher.
“What has happened is that a lot of the normal activities of daily living that involved standing up and moving the muscles in the body have been converted to sitting,” he said. “Technological, social, and economic changes mean that people don’t move their muscles as much as they used to – consequently the levels of energy expenditure as people go about their lives continue to shrink.”
The only way to combat this is by having a physically active lifestyle.

There are a lot of benefits to exercising and all doctors will prescribe them according to your age and weight. But what happens when you overdo it or fanatically adhere to a rigorous exercising schedule daily. Studies conducted by top doctors have found that extreme exercising can give you the same high as any addictive drug as it releases the same neurotransmitters in both cases. The person experiences a high chemically although not induced by any drug.

People who have been doing intense exercises regularly and then stopping suddenly causes them to be out of sorts and feel an intense urge to exercise. The muscles feel as though they are not being used enough and a there is a desire to do dieting to compensate for the lack of exercises and imagined weight gain. This addictive exercising can also lead to eating disorders and research has shown that many women over 40 suffer from this condition. Like anything else in life, exercising also has to be done in a certain limit, otherwise you start associating a perfect body as a result of intense exercising, and the lack of exercise puts you into a frame of mind of your body being weak.

Slimming patches are considered more effective than diet pills, as they can administer the same active ingredients through the skin and into the blood stream, without the need to be digested as in the case of pills and other oral slimming products. The skin is the largest organ and patch is applied directly to this organ for fast and maximum transfer of the active ingredients. Compared to this a slimming pill is known to deliver only 5% of the active ingredient after digestion.

Slimming patches are right now manufactured by about six companies as it’s a comparatively new slimming aid. As for its efficacy, only one product called Slimweight Patch has been clinically tested and proven to be effective. This product has been endorsed by a pharmaceutical company and lab studies have shown a decrease of a maximum of 4 lbs of weight in seven days time.

The basic active ingredient in slimming patches aids in suppressing appetite and hence you eat less and that results in weight loss. One should remember that it is only an aid to weight reduction and proper exercises and diet should not be overlooked.

A UK report has reveled that having naturally big bums, thighs and hips can actually be healthy, and can help to protect against heart and metabolic problems. Fat in hips can actually help to mop-up harmful fatty acids and can help to prevent clogged arteries. Having too little fat around the hips could actually be more harmful than good.

However the bad news is that fat around the waistline does not offer the same protection and is harmful to the body. The breakthrough could help scientists and doctors look at redistributing body fat to these areas to deal with cardiovascular and metabolic problems.

Lead researcher Dr Konstantinos Manolopoulos, of Oxford University, said: “It is shape that matters and where the fat gathers. Fat around the hips and thighs is good for you but around the tummy is bad.”

He said in an ideal world, the more fat around the thighs the better – as long as the tummy stays slim.

“Unfortunately, you tend not to get one without the other,” he said.

Fotini Rozakeas of the British Heart Foundation said: “This research helps us better to understand how fat acts in the body in order to develop new approaches in reducing heart and circulatory disease.

“If you are overweight, obese, or if you have a waist size that is increased, it is important to make changes to your lifestyle, such as eating a healthy diet and doing regular physical activity, to reduce your risk of heart health problems.”

Parkour is a high-activity sport evolved from French military training. Recently, it is becoming popular across American cities, mostly through Internet.

Parkour enthusiasts are posting clips of themselves involved in high-strenuous activities like jumping over railings and barricades, rushing down stairs, climbing walls and swinging from rods and branches. The Net-savvy people are hooked to this high-adrenaline sport by seeing these clips on sites like YouTube. Later, they form Parkour-clubs in their neighborhood to facilitate ‘jam’ sessions.

In Parkour parlance, male practitioners of the sport are called ‘traceurs’ and female fans of the sport ‘traceuses’. At these jam sessions, which happens usually on Saturdays at local parks, the group engage in practicing the sport. The sessions start with warming up and proceed to calisthenics and special moves like landing and rolling. After this, the group runs around the neighborhood, jumping, climbing and swinging.

For Parkour enthusiasts, the whole world is a big playground. The activities coming under the sport can be done anywhere, using whatever equipments available. However, the vigorous nature of the sport makes it appear rough to the uninitiated – that too without any protective gear. This is not deterring people from embracing this sport glamorized by YouTube video clips, TV ads and some recent movies.

Due to the high level of physical activity, more men are joining this sport, though the number of girls is increasing day-by-day. The biggest attraction of the sport is that it allows the practitioner to get into shape without the monotony associated with other physical exercises.

No doubt, this extreme sport provides thrill and fun while getting the much-needed exercise. However, the risks involved for the untrained and excessively adventurous is unfathomable. As most of the practitioners pick up this sport through Internet by seeing others performing and not by trained professionals, this risk is too much to be ignored.

Experts advise those interested in the sport to train under supervision. They are recommended to take things slowly, hone their skills and get into better physical shape before trying to imitate the stunts performed by elite performers.

In the United States, the adult obese population continues its increasing trend in 23 states and do not show any tendency to abate in the others either. This is not surprising, though disheartening to the health officials, fitness experts and nutritionists, who worked overtime to spread the message and warn the public about its aftereffects.

Trust for America’s Health is a not-for-profit organization, working in coalition with Robert Wood Foundation, a philanthropic group, for improving the health scenario in the US. Their annual survey regarding obesity among all age groups has revealed this startling truth. The most disappointing fact is that in not even one state among the 50, is obesity showing a tendency to slack off.

The situation is downright scary, as the trend seems to be the same in the young population as well. From the data compiled for the top 12 states, it can be seen that all of them are located in the southern and southeastern parts of the country. Here, food portions are large and healthy ingredients lesser.

The state of Colorado comes in with the best figures, literally. The other states occupying the bottom five spots, with the least growth in obesity percentage are Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont and Hawaii. All of them are located in the eastern coast.

The reason pointed out by the survey for this trend is the economic crisis devastating the country. Due to the recession, the healthy foods have become too expensive for the ordinary citizens. It has also brought in depression, leading to stress and overeating – two main causes for obesity.

The report recommends preventive medical coverage for all US citizens including nutritional assistance. It urges the government to make healthy food available at cheaper rates and to promote nutrition and physical activity among the citizens. Also on agenda is the creation of the National Strategy to Combat Obesity at federal, state and local levels, to work towards a healthier America together with governmental programs.

Experts have come out with some easy ways to stick to a plan and reduce weight without having to starve oneself.

Resolutions never last more than a week hence having specific plans will prove more useful. Writing down exactly how you want your body wants to look and how many pounds you want to lose and having small milestones can keep you motivated.

Walking in a park can be more fun than walking in a mall. Also, joining a game combines exercise with a social event which can become a source of motivation and support.

It is found that having someone to work out with will strengthen your commitments. Having workout buddies who have the same goals as you will help you stick to your plan. The tendency to skip exercising was seen to be less among people who worked out together.

Aerobic exercise not only reduces weight but also reduces your appetite. Biking and running increases levels of a neurotropic factor which suppresses hunger. It helps to have a rhythm and timing your steps or moves to a song will keep you more energized. Fatigue doesn’t distract you as much. 120- 140 beats per minutes are ideal.

If you want perfect abs, 5 days of attention to them everyday is sufficient. While cycling, one is continuously moving and the muscles get the required exercise. Freshly picked vegetables and fruits have the maximum nutrients and they can be had with lean meat, chicken and sea food.

When food contains spices like garlic and pepper, people feel full faster and this curbs overeating and food becomes more enjoyable. Sea food has omega 3 fatty acids which keeps your heart healthy and sharpens your brain. It is also low on calories and will make a very healthy meal that will leave you feeling full.

According to a recent, muscles have more advantages than making you look good. Pumping iron regularly can reduce your cancer risks by a whooping 40 percent. An international team of researchers found that having strong muscles was as important as staying slim and eating right in fighting tumors. Apart from appreciative glances, building up muscles will give u a longer healthier life.

The team of scientists, led by scientists from Sweden’s Karolinska Institute has found that men should weight train and exercise both their upper and lower body at least twice a week. In the study, 8,677 men aged between 20 and 82 were studied for more than 20 years. Regular tests were done on each of the subjects regularly which included tests to find out the muscle strength. The numbers of men who developed cancer and died from it were recorded and the conclusions were drawn based on this.

The study gave clear results. It showed that the men who worked out regularly and had the highest muscle strength were about 30 to 40 percent less likely to develop cancer and die from it than the men who had weaker muscles and didn’t exercise regularly.

Among the men involved in the study, even the men who had high body mass index and fat deposits on the tummy, weight training was found to have a positive effect on their health. Even though maintaining healthy weight is important, doing cardio exercises twice a week helps build muscle strength.

A health information officer said, “There’s no need to become a body builder. Just 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week that leaves you warm and slightly out of breath can have a positive effect.” Regular moderate exercise also keeps your muscles healthy and strong.
