In positive news for those suffering from type 2 diabetes and those prone to developing it, scientists at the University of Michigan health system have come across useful results from the daily use of grapes. One of the precursors to type 2 diabetes seems to be controlled well through a diet which contains a high amount of grapes. It has been understood that the main ingredient for this is phytochemicals. These are found in abundance on green red and black grapes. Extensive research has been conducted in lab rats.

Two groups of rats where chosen for the project. Each was fed with two different types of diets. One contained high amounts of grapes blended in with a normal American diet. The other one did not contain any grapes. To offset the high amount of calories got through the grapes, additional sugar was added. After 3 months on this diet it was seen that the rats with grape diet had lower blood pressure better heart functioning and improved glucose tolerance. All this leads us to understand that grapes are good for the heart and a check on diabetes. For more information visit this link:

Low GI diets are making headlines as a popular option for losing weight. It helps to know what the GI is and how it works.

The glycaemic index, GI, is a measure of how fast glucose is released into the blood stream once someone has eaten. Glucose, which has a GI value of 100, is used as the reference in the index. Glucose tends to have the highest sugar content out of all foods, so all other foodstuffs fall between the range of 0 and 100. GI diets are based on the theory that during digestion, foods with a low GI value break down slowly. In turn, they release sugar (glucose) into the blood slowly so that the body has a constant supply of energy. As a result, one feels fuller for a long time and this reduces the chances of them snacking.

On the other hand, foods with a high GI release high levels of sugar into the blood. This raises the blood sugar and is likely to leave your energy levels low.

Because some low GI foods may have high fat and calorie levels, you should observe the rules of healthy eating to see results. Find examples of low GI foods from the source site.

Teenagers can be the most difficult bunch of people to feed. They are very opinionated and often ‘know’ what it is they want to eat. Unfortunately, their choices are all wrong. It may be impossible to stop them from eating all the junk they nibble on, but when it comes to meal times, you can try to compensate their bad eating habits by providing well balanced meals.

Provide as much minerals as possible. The latest survey results show that most teenagers (11-18 years old), both boys and girls, are not getting enough potassium and magnesium. Girls further lacked enough iodine, zinc and calcium. Magnesium is necessary for the building of strong bones and boosting muscle health. Potassium maintains muscle strength and keeps us alert. Iodine promotes a healthy thyroid, zinc makes the immune system stronger and calcium is what builds bone density.

Here are some good sources of the above minerals:
- Magnesium can be found in wholegrain cereals, seeds, nuts and peanut butter.
- Potassium can be found in most fruits and vegetables. Good sources include spinach, bananas, peppers, papayas and parsnips.
- For zinc, red meat, oily fish and pumpkin seeds are good sources.
- Iodine can be sourced from seafood.
- Calcium can be found in dark green vegetables, sesame seeds, yogurt, milk and sardines.

In latter years, the number of people with food sensitivity has been increasing in the UK. Doctors are yet to pin-point the exact reason for this, but factors that contribute to this condition include one’s genetic order, development of the immune system right from birth and exposure to certain foods.

Food sensitivity can be classified into food allergies and food intolerance. Food allergy triggers an abnormal immune response when one takes certain foods, mostly proteins. The body reacts by releasing immunoglobulin, leading to severe symptoms. Depending on the protein causing the allergy; the body’s reaction can be mild, severe, rapid or life-threatening. Symptoms of food allergy include breathing difficulties and swelling of the mouth and throat.

Food intolerance on the other hand happens when the body reacts to a food substance, other than a protein, mainly because it is unable to digest it, without the immune system getting involved. Symptoms of food intolerance are less severe and occur slowly. It occurs only when one eats huge amounts of the substance causing the intolerance.

Most of the foods that cause allergies are eggs, milk and fish, cereals that have gluten, peanuts, sesame seeds, soya and sulphites. Both children and adults can suffer from food allergies. In children, the condition improves as they grow older.

It seems ironical that a skinny person can have excess fat, the same layers that obese people are trying to shed. However, research has shown that anorexic people do have high fat content, disputing the misconception that they have no cholesterol at all. This fat content appears yellow and is found in the bone marrow. There is a decreased amount of red marrow too, which leaves bones vulnerable to fractures and increases the risk factors of developing different conditions. Here in the UK, the rate of anorexic girls is on the rise, as more girls starve themselves in order to maintain an “acceptable” body size.

When the body is starved for long, mesenchymal cells in the bone marrow differentiate into fat cells instead of bone-forming cells. This explains the loss in bone marrow. It is an unhealthy state which can lead to severe fractures and osteoporosis.

In younger girls, bone formation stops instead of forming to the maximum. Bones lose their density over time. Lack of nutrients in the body triggers hormonal changes; the bone marrow no longer produces cells needed to form bones.

Another abnormality in anorexics is dangerously low temperatures due to lack of insulating fat. This condition is severe and requires constant monitoring by a medical specialist. Learn more about anorexia from the source article.

Antioxidants are constituents of certain food products which reverse the process of oxidation damage to the body. Cellular respiration is an exothermic process and it releases heat. This heat can be damaging to the body. On the long run, it can be serious. But these antioxidants can reverse the damage which is caused to the body. It is used to increase the oxygen intake into the muscles. But recent research has shown that too much of these antioxidants can actually be harmful. It is seen that once something good for the body is found out, the next step is to make it synthetically. These synthetic antioxidants have been used widely by athletes.

We have come to know now that it can cause muscle damage and dystrophy. These are not good for the body, especially since it accelerates the signs of aging. It has been understood that we do not actually need to make a conscious effort to make up for antioxidants. Most of the food items we eat contain a fair amount of antioxidants. It becomes necessary only when we see fatigue and stress regularly in the muscles. Antioxidants are popular today but we need to exercise restrain while using them.

Vitamin D3 is a type of dietary vitamin which is derived from eggs, meat, milk and other dairy products. The sun is also a major source of this vitamin. We may suffer from deficiencies of this vitamin due to the fact that we may not consume these food products or going out in the sun is not good for the complexion. Deficiencies symptoms include high blood pressure, obesity, Psoriasis and sometimes mental illnesses such as depression. Sun bathing is one of the most highly recommended forms of gaining necessary vitamin D3. If we are indeed vary of going out in the sun there are other types of food items which we can indeed consume.

Top among them is Cod Liver oil. This is found in the common fish called cod. It is a rich source of this type of vitamin. In fact it is the purest natural forms of the vitamin. Egg yolk is also a very good source of the vitamin. There are certain classes of food called fortified foods. These will contain addition amounts of the vitamin. All we need to do is check the labels and purchase the right one.

Research has shown that right diet is a major factor that can reduce the risk of cancer. Although Nutrition scientists have not been able to show a direct connection between diet and cancer, there is enough evidence to suggest that the right diet can reduce the risk of certain cancers considerably.

One of the main causes attributed to cancers of pancreas, colon, kidney, rectum, breast and esophagus is excess fat in the body. So you need to cut calories and eat a healthy diet which contains a good amount of foods rich in fiber, fruits and vegetables. Drinks and foods having a lot of sugar content are to be avoided and do not overeat.

It is best to avoid alcohol altogether but since it is not possible for many people; men can limit their intake to two drinks and women to one a day. Excess of this will increase the risk of colon and breast cancers. You can totally stop the consumption of meat which is processed and eating of red meats should be curtailed. Red meat provides iron but should not be eaten more than twice in a week and should not exceed 18 oz.

Many people are conscious of getting the right amount of vitamins in their diets but pay little attention to minerals. Minerals play an important part for maintaining good health and they should not be ignored. Minerals are inorganic substances and there are various minerals which are required by the body in varying quantities.

Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium are the minerals which are present in all the cells of the body and even a small imbalance in their intake can prove disastrous to the health of the body. If you are having a proper diet the requirements of these minerals are met and their deficiency or imbalance is usually caused by factors such as particular illness, age and so on. The body needs minerals for performing certain vital functions like building new tissue, processing nerve reactions, clotting blood, regulating pH levels, releasing energy from food, contracting muscles and regulating other processes in the body.

There are certain minerals which are needed in small quantities but they are equally important. These minerals are copper which helps the body to absorb iron, selenium that ensures the health of cells and Iodine which regulates metabolic activities with the production of thyroid hormones.
