There are two different kinds of bar iatric surgery.  There are restrictive procedures that limit the amount of food you can consume, this includes the lap band and stomach stapling, and then there are the malabsorption procedures that limit the amount of nutrients and calories you take in from the food you eat.  The best option is one that does both these would include the Roux-N-Y and the Duodenal switch.  Both procedures have their pros and cons it is up to you to do extensive research to determine which option best fits your level of dedication and lifestyle.

The DuoDenal switch is a newer procedure in the US than the Roux-N-Y it has been preformed for many years abroad.  It offers a better quality of life than any of the other procedures and has the added advantage of curing type 2 diabetes in 97% of cases.  The duodenal switch is a procedure where approximately 75% or your stomach is removed and your intestines are reformed so that you malabsorb what you do eat.  You do not have to deal with dumping syndrome as you do in the Roux-N-Y nor do you have the B-12 deficiencies.

The Duodenal switch does have its own drawbacks, the first being that you will probably have to travel to find a surgeon that performs the procedure. This is by far the most complicated bar iatric surgery to have preformed.  You will also have to agree to supplementation for the rest of your life.  You will have to take vitamin D, Vitamin A, Calcium, and eat a high protein diet.  You may also develop iron deficiencies with either of the surgeries.

Keep in mind that bar iatric surgery is a life-changing event that you will have to prepare for.  Do your own personal research so that you can find the procedure that is right for your lifestyle. You can always get more information from the source article.
